Electricity is unique in the energy world because unlike Oil, Oil Products or Natural Gas, Electricity cannot be stored efficiently.  Electricity must for the most part be used as it is produced!  Regional Electricity Market participants are subject to constant checks to see if supply and demand is "balanced".  In the UK this is done on a one-half hourly basis.  On Continental Europe this is done on an hourly basis.
